(Untold Stories) Chapter Thirty Five (2) : Storytellers

Khushi had her cupboard open before her and her face hidden behind its frames when a knock at the door caught her attention. And the face that greeted her made her forget whatever it was that she was doing.

“Kaka!” she exclaimed, walking quickly forward to meet the grey haired man at the door. His wrinkle faced features broke into a toothy smile. He had served the household for most of his life, like the generations before him. From being Khushi’s confidante while she climbed up mango trees, to being the one who stole streetside food into the house for her sake, he had done it all. His frail demeanor made Khushi feel a pang of sorrow in her chest, but she hid it with a smile.

“How are you Kaka? I’m sorry, I didn’t see you last night. It wasn’t…” her voice trailed away. Surely whatever had happened the night before would be common news in the servants’ quarters by now.

Raghubir Singh shook his head. “I wasn’t there last night. My nephew does my work here now, I don’t find it in myself to do it anymore.”

Khushi nodded understandingly.

“—But this morning I heard that Bibiji has come. So I had to of course come see you,” he said, then pursed his lips in a grandfatherly pout as he looked at her. “They don’t give you food in Delhi, do they?”

“They don’t have Chottelal’s chooran and chaat papdi with extra imli chutney, I can tell you that,” she said, and the man chuckled heartily in the shared memory of their secrets.

They spoke for a while, with Khushi asking him about his health and family, and his village house. He in turn asked her how life was in Delhi, and they spoke briefly about her Buaji and how her absence could still very much be felt in the house. The subject of her marriage, Shyam, or the incidents from the previous night did not come up. It did not matter for how long one had been serving a family. Some lines weren’t meant to be crossed in the house, and Raghubir Singh was more aware of it than anyone else.

After a little while, however, a look of hesitance flitted across his face before he abruptly blurted out, “Things have not been good here, Bibiji.”

“What do you mean?” Khushi asked with some trepidation in her voice.

“I know it’s not my place to say…” he began, looking distinctly uneasy. “But I have…my father, grandfather, all have been serving the family and there are some things—”

“Kaka you can say what you want if it’s concerning you so much, you have the right,” Khushi urged him. She would have been more cautious, but it did not seem like it was her own personal life he was trying to open a conversation on.

He nodded slowly. “They’ve just let it go…Bibiji. Something needs to be done.”

“What do you mean?”

“Maalkin is frequently sick these days, but Maalik…isn’t doing well either, lately. Govind, my nephew, overheard the doctor insisting him to get proper checkups, but he brushes it off. Cholesterol problem he had, you would remember. Now it’s worse but he will not do anything about it. But what’s more concerning is…” he paused, then continued, “Maalik has stopped taking active interest in the estate.  You must have seen the house, it’s not how it used to be maintained a few years ago. It needs repair and attention, but it’s just falling apart in many places. A house this old needs constant maintenance, Bibiji. And then there is the new manager…you must be aware that Dinesh Jha left the city a couple of years back so Maalik replaced him. Total corrupt man…he can see that there is no one to help Maalik so he is taking advantage of it. I am not very educated, but knowing the man I can tell you that all accounts records are amiss. So much property…and where half the rent is going no one knows. He keeps inventing problems and urges Maalik that money would be needed to settle them otherwise lawsuits would pile up.”

Khushi didn’t need to be told that her father would readily throw money at anything or anyone if convinced that it would make a problem simply disappear from his sight.

“Then there is a local builder with solid political ties. He has been putting pressure to sell the house to make a five star hotel here…you know this area is considered premium real estate in the city. Maalik has not agreed yet, but he hasn’t refused either. If the house gets sold…Bibiji it’s one of the few remaining havelis in Lucknow that is hundreds of years old. Aise kaise…” he said plaintively. “Seeing all this, the staff has also relaxed and become useless. Someone needs to keep a check on them Bibiji, but no one is there. At least in the house I try to utilize my influence however I can to make sure the kitchen is functioning properly, and the grain coming from the fields is being properly stored…things like that. But I’m also old now, I can’t do much. And even if I could, I’m only a servant of the family at the end of the day…”

When he looked at Khushi, his face was flushed, as if it had been a clear ordeal for him to gather courage to say all that he had. “I have been keeping it all in,” he said in a shaky voice. “You know I’m terrified of Maalik, I can’t say all this to him, not that I have not tried….but in the past few years I often thought to myself, when Bibiji comes home, I’ll tell her everything. She will do something. I have been waiting for you to come.”

Khushi stood listening wordlessly, her expressions unreadable.

“I know you have been upset since you came Bibiji, and I don’t want to add to your worries, I really don’t,” he said, shifting his weight from one tired foot to another. “But I heard you’re leaving very soon…that you don’t intend to stay…so I knew I didn’t have much time. You will forgive me for making you more upset at such a time…but I thought you would want to know. I beg your pardon if—”

Khushi shook her head. “No, it’s okay.” She reached for her bag, took out a pen and paper and scribbled numbers upon it. “Here’s my number, Kaka. Call me if you need anything or if you wish to speak,” she said, handing it to him.

He took the paper from her, holding it between frail fingers.

“If you don’t come more frequently Bibiji,” he said with a sad, watery smile, “this might be the last I see you. Your Kaka is not getting any younger either.”

“Don’t say that,” she said, swallowing hard. “You’ve many more years to go, all that exercise in running behind me is bound to be useful now.”

He let out a dry chuckle once more. Then folded his hands to take leave. Khushi mirrored the gesture, and Raghubir Singh turned away. He had walked away a few steps when Khushi called out to him, “Kaka, take care of yourself. Go stay with your son for a few days in the village, enjoy with your grandchildren.”

A sad smile touched the old man’s face and something a lot like wistfulness flashed in his eyes. He turned slowly and looked at Khushi with a forlorn expression.

“Old age is a terrible time to realize you’ve made mistakes, Bibiji. It is also a terrible time to be left all alone…But…if possible, children should try to forgive…they’re all we have. Although it is understandable if they don’t.”

With that, he had said all that he meant to, and gone a step further. With a parting meaningful look, he finally took his leave.

Khushi slowly walked back into her room, and unzipped the duffel bag she had carried from Delhi. Reaching inside, she took out several velvet boxes of jewelry. It seemed surreal that it had been barely more than a day since she had visited her bank locker.

She sat on the bed with the boxes in her lap for several quiet moments. Then with a determined look on her face, she arose and stepped out of her room, her arms occupied with the weight of family heirloom dating back several generations. Yet it felt like it was more than just the jewelry’s weight she was holding in her hands.

“Where is Baba?” she asked a house help passing by the corridor.

“He’s in his study. Should I—”

“No. I’ll go see him. Thank you,” she said, and walked away.

I realized I haven’t been updating the story index since the past several updates. It’s done now 🙂

  1. Lovely it feels something shifted in Khushi or she got some vision or goals to work on. Family should be cared for and Ofcourse they can be forgiven only when you see repentance and looks like both parents are repenting and Khushi is getting the right attention she needs finally. Thank you sabi!!!

  5. Hey another update is here😀
It’s good to see Kushi knows that… The sad reality of our lives irrespective of whether our relationship with our parents is good or not is that our lives are so busy that it’s hard to keep up and take time out to do something like what Kushi is expected to do for her parents… It’s the saddest part.. some parents don’t expect it while some tell or complaint how children don’t do enough… It will be interesting to see how Kushi will deal with this…
    Waiting for more
Lots of love and cheers 🥂❤️

  8. Seems like she’ll be extending her stay now. End of the day she is the only daughter and she got a lot of work to do now. Talking with kaka made her realise how her parents have just given up on a lot of things. Khushi will ensure to bring the things back right on track before she leaves. A conversation with a her father and may be a little help from certain someone will be the step forward.
Also I’m in love with frequent updates🤍

  9. Okay this update hit a chord right in my heart and can totally relate to Khushi’s character. Being with my parents after resigning from my job, for the last couple of years, taught me many things.

Parents live in a very small word the way they have been conditioned.
Their young age was all about surviving well and being secured.

The terms Dreams, job, ambition, mental health, hustle – they don’t understand or rather don’t want to understand.

Their sole life purpose is good education, marriage, social status. Their life has been conditioned like that and having no exposure from outer world make them believe they are right. They won’t accept the fact, Parents’ can be wrong too.

Even if Parents try to understand us, the peer pressure and mocking from society(so-called relatives and good friends) make them somehow stop listening to kids.

Its takes patience and perseverance to understand our parents.

To be Frank, infact in this age, we have to become parents for our dad and mom – explain things just like we would do for children. We can’t negate the fact that our dreams and exposure kind of comes from being privileged of right education provided by our parents.

Hope Khushi’s dad see a daughters worth after she sets things right here(I know she will😉)

P.S too much of a rant I know. But as I said I sail in the same boat. Forcing my parents and taking them on health check up today😅 work in progress of setting things right here before I fly away for my dreams.

I would say so much more if I weren’t writing the story (don’t want my personal opinions to interfere with the reading experience) but what you’re doing is amazing and I hope you’re able to ace the transition in roles ❤

  12. Our elders are often neglected sometimes not intentionally by their children who are in pursuit of their own lives. Glad Khushi has been made aware of it so as she can take figure out her next step.

  14. Oops! Kaka seems to have opened a can of worms. Would this new information make Khushi re-think her priorities? Ashish Gupta is probably too proud to confess about his problems, especially to his “daughter”. Now he also has the added weight of marrying his daughter to the wrong man and trusting him over her. Assuming Khushi offers to help, will he let her take the reins?

This was an interesting chapter, Sabi. Kaka’s partying words indicated Khushi’s parents may have realized they have made a mistake…something he can perhaps relate to his own situation. Her parents had left her alone in the most difficult times, but from what I know of Khushi, she wouldn’t do that to her parents…even if they don’t apologize. Like they say ‘Life becomes easier when you learn to accept the apology you never got’ I am curious to know how Khushi deals with this situation, and what effect it has on her & Arnav’s blossoming relationship.

Thanks for giving us back to back updates of this wonderful story 🤗😘

  15. Thanks for the wonderful chapter Sabi.

Thinking about Khushi’s parents made me feel so sorry and sad for them.
Their actions, their thoughts, their outlook towards the world and their inability to look beyond the society barriers has made their life so pitiable in their old age.

If only they had brought up and encouraged Khushi to reach her potential, if only they had found a SIL worthy of her, then probably today they could be having a peaceful retired life, knowing that the next generation will take care of their family and it’s inheritance, in every sense.
Instead of fighting some useless legal battles with unworthy people, they could have been playing with their grandkids.

Not sure what Khushi has decided, but hope she puts this point across to her father.
As much as I want Khushi to achieve something in life on her own, I hope she dedicates a bit of her time towards her family responsibilities too. Else few years down the line, she will feel very guilty about it.

  16. You did it again Sabi. 🥰 Reminded me of Ashish conversation with Arnav and why he had approached his family for Khushi’s marriage 😊 There is always a lot of grey..not all is black and white in life.

Anyway a lovely chapter, loved how you got Kaka to reveal quite a bit of what is happening in Khushi’s parents life. Their despair, or a lack of interest in life in general be his/their health or their estate.

Ashish a proud man will not reveal to Khushi their state of affairs. It is telling (love and care) how they have maintained Khushi room, even though she has not visited in 3 years.

Look forward to the confrontation.(and happiness)…which is bound to happen as Khushi is planning to cut ties and give back all the bridal jewellery.

How are things in your end…watched something light hearted recently?
I watched “The Stranger ‘..thriller..not bad. Armitage in cast helps 😁

  17. Hi dear❤
Seems Khushi is more comfortable with Kaka than her own parents. His words have touched Khushi. She’ll force her parents to take Care of their health. Also, since she doesn’t have her job now, she might take care of her ancestral property and business. This is more or less similar to the story of every job oriented child at present, where parents and the family business are waiting to be taken care of..
No Arshi moments here, but a short and sweet update.
Waiting for next part soon dear❤❤

    1. Khushi learned from ‘Kaka’ that all was not well with her parents. Shashi seems to have given up looking after his affairs. Some builder with political influence was after the house as he wants to build a hotel there. Seems like Khushi may get involved in her father’s affairs instead of being free to run her own business.
      Thank you Sabi.

    Hope you’re doing well!

It will be intriguing to see how Khushi will take in these issues and if she would take a more active role in managing her estate?

She’s realizing what her parents might be going through as well. Doesn’t justify his actions in any way but will be interesting to see how Khushi will treat him going forward.

Hope you are doing ok – would love to see this story updated regularly!!

However this one is such a different genre and you handled it so so well. Praying for your AD to get better and give you some time to complete this awesome story. I keep on imagining Arnav and his expressions in my head. This Arnav is so different than usual ASR and no doubt I love this one so much. Thanks
